Executive Summary

Designed and implemented an AI integration platform for a SaaS startup, embedding advanced machine learning functionalities into their core PHP application. Business Context

The client’s SaaS platform, built on a robust PHP codebase, offered various services that required significant manual intervention for data processing, content moderation, and customer support. This manual overhead was unsustainable for their rapid growth, leading to scalability issues and high operational expenses. The goal was to leverage AI to automate these processes, freeing up human resources for more complex tasks.

Technical Challenges

The project presented several technical hurdles:

  • Legacy PHP Integration: Integrating modern Python-based AI/ML models and services into an existing, large-scale PHP/Symfony application without a complete rewrite.
  • Real-time Processing: Ensuring low-latency communication between the PHP application and AI services for real-time data processing and decision-making.
  • Scalability of AI Services: Designing AI services that could scale independently to handle fluctuating workloads and large data volumes.
  • Data Pipeline: Building a robust and efficient data pipeline for training, inference, and continuous model improvement.
  • Model Management: Implementing a system for versioning, deploying, and monitoring multiple ML models in production.

Solution Approach & Architecture

Our solution adopted a microservices-oriented approach for AI functionalities, orchestrated by a central API gateway:

  • API-First Design: All AI services were exposed via well-defined RESTful APIs, allowing the PHP application to interact with them seamlessly.
  • Polyglot Microservices: Developed AI services primarily in Python (leveraging TensorFlow and PyTorch) and deployed them as independent microservices.
  • Asynchronous Communication: Utilized Kafka for asynchronous event streaming, enabling decoupled communication between the PHP application and AI services for background processing and data synchronization.
  • Serverless & Containerized Deployment: Deployed stateless AI inference services on AWS Lambda for cost-efficiency and auto-scaling, while stateful training services ran on Kubernetes clusters.
  • Data Lake & MLOps: Established a data lake on S3 for raw data storage and implemented MLOps practices for automated model training, evaluation, and deployment.

Implementation Details

Key implementation aspects included:

  • Symfony Bundles: Developed custom Symfony bundles to encapsulate AI API clients and integrate them cleanly into the PHP application.
  • Feature Engineering Pipelines: Built automated data pipelines using Apache Airflow to extract, transform, and load data for model training.
  • Model Versioning: Implemented MLflow for tracking experiments, managing model versions, and facilitating reproducible deployments.
  • Monitoring & Alerting: Integrated Prometheus and Grafana for real-time monitoring of AI service performance, latency, and error rates.
  • Security: Ensured secure communication between services using OAuth2 and API keys.
